British athletes win 19 ETU Standard Distance Championship Gold medals

The presentation for the ETU Triathlon European Championships (Standard Distance) will have had a very red, white and blue feel to it, with the British Age-Group team securing a huge haul of 51 medals in Tartu, Estonia on Saturday.

In total, the 278 strong team – almost exactly 50% of the field – won 19 of the 27 Gold medals awarded (70%) and filled 68% of the podium slots.

The British men provided the fastest six finishers overall, headed by Donald Brooks (40-44), who dominated his category by almost six and half minutes, retaining the championship he won last year in Kitzbuhel. He also won the 40-44 World Championships in Rotterdam last year.

The fastest overall female was also British, that honour going to Alison Mackenzie (30-34). That – we believe (?) – was her first GB Age-Group representation. Some way to start.

In the M70-74 division, Silver for Michael Smallwood (a former ERDINGER Athlete of the Month) represented his 25th ETU/ITU medal – that is a record for British Age-Group athletes. They don’t come easy just because you are ‘older’ either. Michael had a tough battle with long-term rival Klaus Kübler (AUT), who managed to chase him down on the run to take the Gold. For perspective, the Bronze medallist was almost 23 minutes behind Michael. He’ll be after medal #26 in a few weeks time in Glasgow over the Standard Distance.
